At present, I am the administrator and main dogsbody for 20 Silicon Graphics
computers of various flavors. SGI is a very common platform in Computer Aided
Drug Design because of their excellent graphics capabilities. Almost all commercial
Drug Design Software vendors support SGI and some other platform (not necessarily
the same one.)
Personally I'm fond of the IRIX operating system. It's designed for non-technical people to maintain, which means that you don't need a degree in computer science to be able to install a new package.
I also have 4 HP J6000 machines which operate as batch servers. I don't tend to do much with those... HP is a common UNIX platform which many people support, including all of Pharmacia's UNIX team. IRIX is not that common, and HP people tend to break it.
